Review Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary

After a long wait and instead of getting the sequel to the series that was announced many years ago, Ubisoft surprisingly announced Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary, a new version that we can say is a remaster of the original part of the game.

Review Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary

At the beginning of the millennium and before we got to know the Assassin’s Creed series and the Far Cry series in the open world, Ubisoft was known for three main titles: Rayman, Splinter Cell, and Prince of Persia. Then Beyond Good & Evil appeared to change the rules of the game and raise the standard of challenge to a completely different level that surprised everyone!

The twentieth anniversary version of Beyond Good & Evil is a return from afar, especially with the repeated questions about the release date of the long-awaited second part. A modified version of the first part was released in 2011 on Xbox 360 and PS3, and now we get the twentieth anniversary version of the game, so how did it perform? This is what we will know in our review below.

Beyond Good & Evil Story Overview

The story revolves around Jade, a freelance reporter who also runs an orphanage for children affected by humanity's war with the DomZ, an evil alien race. The game world is called Hillys and is very similar to our own, with the addition of anthropomorphic animals and some other technology.

Jade tries to uncover the mysteries and conspiracies behind the evil alien invasion of her home planet. This planet is inhabited by a mix of species ranging from humans to more bizarre creatures such as human-like sharks. Jade lives in a lighthouse on an island where her home is threatened and attacked by the DomZ aliens, so you start your rescue mission to escape to the moon.

The story was and still is the most prominent feature of the game, as during the period in which the game was released, the video game industry really needed this type of story that would distance players a little from the control of horror games and open world games, so Ubisoft took the opportunity in a distinctive way.

New look.. while maintaining the essence of the original

BG&E has always been a game that has benefited from its stunning visual design rather than extreme graphical fidelity. I was worried that the remaster would lose this aesthetic and go for a more rigid approach, but thankfully it has retained the feel and style of the game and produced an update that is similar to the memories we have of the game.

The development team is credited for updating the soundtrack and re-recording it with a live orchestra for the game in its twentieth edition, but it has not changed. In terms of genre, BG&E draws inspiration from action-adventures like classic Zelda and blends it with a stealth and stealth style, it feels like a game that anticipates the open world expansion of many contemporary games, but it controls the scale to still feel intimate and meaningful to its original version. The map is also relatively small, but it is full of secrets and hidden areas that truly reward those who seek them out.

Slight tweaks that herald a better part to come!

Some may think that the 20th Anniversary Edition is just the current generation version, but the development team at Ubisoft has made many changes, including the control that has become smoother, especially on the PlayStation 5.

Among the other important changes was the camera mode, which has now become clearer, allowing the player to see everything from unobtrusive angles. It seemed to me that Ubisoft really listened to the players' complaints about the original version and modified it in the current version.

The most important change is the addition of some missions that are directly related to the upcoming second part, although the game does not contain the online mode or even additional content, but there are missions that talk about the future of the game, although we do not know anything currently about BG&E2.

Advantages

  • New missions that are directly related to the next part.
  • Improved graphics that look brighter.
  • Smooth control that has been modified to suit current generation devices.
  • The gameplay is distinctive and depends on stealth and infiltration.
  • An enjoyable story that reminds us of old and direct story games.
  • A map full of details and exploration areas despite its small size.
  • Camera angles have been adjusted based on player reviews from the original.

Désavantage

  • Some technical glitches.
  • Lack of variety in game modes.
  • Some of the character animation is poor.

Very good - 8

Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary is truly the best way to play this iconic classic, updated in terms of controls, accuracy, and more. The base game can show its age at times, especially during the stealth sections, but there's so much fun and excitement here that it deserves a whole new audience.
